Malta’s Christmas markets run from early December into the first week of January, led by Natalis Notabilis in Rabat, Fairyland Santa’s City in Valletta and dozens of village markets across Malta and Gozo.
- Natalis Notabilis in Rabat, the largest Christmas market in Malta, is listed for Friday 4 to Sunday 13 December 2026.
- Fairyland Santa’s City at Pjazza Tritoni in Valletta ran from 5 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 last season, with an ice rink, rides and a Christmas market.
- December days in Malta average 17°C, so every market is an outdoor evening out rather than a cold-weather ordeal.
- Aster House is in central Sliema, a short ferry crossing from Valletta and around half an hour by car from Rabat.
Malta does Christmas with real warmth. From the first week of December, towns and villages across the island switch on their lights, set up wooden stalls and fill their squares with carols, cribs and the smell of honey rings and roasted chestnuts. Days in December average 17°C, and the weather in Malta in December is mild enough to browse outdoor stalls in a light jacket, which makes a Maltese Christmas market feel very different from the frosty markets of northern Europe.
The two big names are Natalis Notabilis in the old streets of Rabat and Fairyland Santa’s City around the Triton Fountain at the entrance to Valletta, but the real charm is in the smaller markets that pop up in village squares, forts and gardens. Staying in Sliema puts you in the middle of it all, with the Valletta ferry a short walk from the seafront and the evenings free for harbour-side dinners and the promenade walk I describe in my local guide to things to do in Sliema.
I have spent many Decembers in Malta, and the markets are only one part of what makes the season special. Maltese families still build elaborate cribs, churches hold candlelit Midnight Mass, and the Valletta streets glow with lights from late November until Epiphany. Every market, date and tradition worth planning a winter break around is set out in the sections that follow, along with the practical details on weather, transport and what stays open over Christmas.

Coming for the Christmas markets?
Aster House sleeps up to 9, with underfloor heating, a media room with a 2-metre projector screen and a rooftop terrace. 150 metres from the Sliema seafront and a short walk from the Valletta ferry.
Malta Christmas Market Dates 2026: Every Christmas Market in Malta and Gozo at a Glance

Most of Malta’s Christmas markets are run by local councils, parishes and community groups, and each one sets its own dates. Several of the 2026 markets are already listed, while the biggest attractions, such as Fairyland, usually confirm their dates in November. The table gathers every market with its 2026 listing, or last season’s dates where the new ones have not yet been announced, so you can plan your trip around the ones you most want to see.
| Christmas market | Where | 2026 dates | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natalis Notabilis | Rabat, historic centre | Listed 4 to 13 December 2026 | Crafts, food, the biggest market |
| Woodland Christmas Market | Ta’ Qali National Park | Listed 4 to 13 December 2026 | Families, woodland setting |
| Fairyland Santa’s City | Pjazza Tritoni, Valletta and Floriana | To be announced (last season 5 December to 4 January) | Children, ice skating, rides |
| Paola Christmas Village | Paola | Listed 12 to 19 December 2026 | Village atmosphere |

| Christmas at Valletta Waterfront | Valletta Waterfront | Friday 25 December 2026 | A Christmas Day outing |
Because the listed dates can still change, check each organiser’s own page or social channels in the week before you travel. The markets are at their liveliest on Friday and Saturday evenings, when families come out after work and school, and the stalls are at their most relaxed on weekday afternoons. Most markets are free to enter, with Fairyland charging for its rides and the ice rink.
Planning Tips for the Malta Christmas Markets
- Go in the second week of December to catch Natalis Notabilis, the Woodland market and the village markets together
- Visit weekday afternoons for relaxed browsing and weekend evenings for music and lights
- Bring some cash, because smaller stalls may not take cards
- Pack a light jacket and an umbrella, since December averages around ten rain days
- Use the ferry and buses from Sliema rather than driving, as parking near the markets is limited
Valletta Christmas Market 2026: Fairyland Santa’s City, Christmas Lights and the Capital at Christmas
Valletta is the heart of Christmas in Malta. Republic Street and Merchants Street are strung with lights from late November, the shop windows fill with decorations, and the squares around St John’s Co-Cathedral and the Grandmaster’s Palace become natural meeting points for carol singers and families. From Sliema, the ferry takes only a few minutes and drops you beneath the city walls, so an evening in Valletta is easy to fit around a day of sightseeing.
The main Christmas attraction in the capital is Fairyland Santa’s City, set around the Triton Fountain at the city gate and stretching towards the Floriana Granaries. Last season it ran from 5 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, with an ice-skating rink, a Ferris wheel, rides for children, a Christmas market and visits to Santa. The 2026 dates are usually confirmed in November on the Visit Malta Fairyland page, and the rides and ice rink are ticketed while the market itself is free to wander.
Allow time for the city itself while you are there. Many of the best things to do in Valletta, from St John’s Co-Cathedral to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, are just as rewarding in December, and the cooler weather makes walking the bastions a pleasure. On Christmas Day, Valletta Waterfront holds its own Christmas at Valletta Waterfront celebration on the harbour, and it returns on 31 December for New Year’s Eve.
Valletta at Christmas at a Glance
- Fairyland Santa’s City at Pjazza Tritoni, dates for 2026 to be announced
- Ice rink, Ferris wheel, children’s rides, Santa and a Christmas market
- Christmas lights along Republic Street and Merchants Street
- Christmas at Valletta Waterfront on 25 December and New Year’s Eve on 31 December 2026
- A few minutes by ferry from Sliema, landing beneath the city walls
Natalis Notabilis 2026: The Rabat Christmas Market and Malta’s Largest Christmas Village

Natalis Notabilis is the biggest Christmas market in Malta, and for 2026 it is listed for Friday 4 to Sunday 13 December. It fills the old streets of Rabat, just outside the walls of Mdina, with more than a hundred stalls selling handmade gifts, ceramics, lace, filigree and festive food. Last year it ran for ten days in December, opening in the evenings on weekdays and from the morning at weekends.
What makes Natalis Notabilis special is its setting. The limestone streets, baroque churches and little squares of Rabat feel made for a Christmas market, and the lights and live music give the whole town a festive glow after dark. Combine it with an afternoon walk through Mdina, which is at its most atmospheric in the soft December light, then stay on in Rabat for dinner and the market in the evening.
Rabat is around half an hour from Sliema by car or taxi, and buses run from Valletta. Parking fills up quickly on market evenings, so a taxi or ride-share is the easiest way to get there and back. Families should aim for a weekend afternoon, when the children’s activities are running and the streets are easier to navigate with a pushchair.
Natalis Notabilis 2026 at a Glance
- Listed for Friday 4 to Sunday 13 December 2026
- Historic centre of Rabat, next to the walled city of Mdina
- More than 100 stalls with crafts, gifts, food and drink
- Live music, lights and activities for children
- Around 30 minutes from Sliema by car or taxi
Christmas in Sliema: The Seafront, Festive Evenings and the Best Base for the Malta Christmas Markets

Sliema is where I would base any Christmas break in Malta. The seafront promenade is lit up for the season, the shopping streets around Tower Road and The Strand are decorated, and the Tigné Point area usually hosts festive stalls and seasonal events through December. More than anything, Sliema keeps its restaurants, cafés and bars open right through the winter, so there is always somewhere warm for dinner after a day at the markets.
The practical advantages matter at Christmas too. The ferry to Valletta leaves from the Sliema seafront, buses reach Rabat, Mdina and the north of the island, and taxis are easy to find for the evening markets. After an evening at Fairyland or Natalis Notabilis, it is a short journey back to Sliema rather than a long drive across the island.
Aster House is a restored Art-Deco townhouse 150 metres from the Sliema seafront, and it was made for this kind of festive family gathering. Underfloor heating keeps the house warm on cooler nights, the kitchen and dining room are big enough for a Christmas lunch for nine, and the media room with its 2-metre projector screen is perfect for a Christmas film after a day out.
Why Sliema Works for a Christmas Break in Malta
- Restaurants and cafés on the seafront stay open all winter
- Short ferry crossing to Valletta and Fairyland Santa’s City
- Easy taxi and bus links to Rabat, Ta’ Qali and Naxxar
- A lit-up promenade for evening walks by the sea
- Aster House sleeps up to 9 with underfloor heating and a projector media room
More Christmas Markets in Malta and Gozo: Ta’ Qali, Naxxar, Xgħajra and the Bethlehem Village in Għajnsielem

Beyond Valletta and Rabat, some of the most enjoyable Christmas markets in Malta are the smaller ones, run by local councils, parishes and artisans in gardens, palaces and old forts. They are more relaxed than the big events and give a real sense of how Maltese families celebrate the season.
1. Woodland Christmas Market at Ta’ Qali National Park
Held around the Oak Tree Circle in Ta’ Qali National Park, the Woodland Christmas Market is listed for 4 to 13 December 2026, the same dates as Natalis Notabilis. Its setting among the trees makes it one of the most family-friendly markets on the island, with food stalls, crafts and plenty of open space for children to run around.
Ta’ Qali sits in the centre of Malta, a short drive from Rabat, so the Woodland market and Natalis Notabilis combine well in a single afternoon and evening. Check the official programme for daily opening times before you set out, because hours vary between weekdays and weekends.
2. Malta Artisan Christmas Market at Palazzo Parisio, Naxxar
On Sunday 20 December 2026, the grand Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar hosts the Malta Artisan Christmas Market from 11:00 to 18:00. The palace and its gardens make a beautiful backdrop for stalls of handmade jewellery, ceramics, textiles and seasonal food from local makers.
It is the best market for thoughtful gifts to take home, and a visit to the palace itself adds a touch of Maltese history to the day. Naxxar is around 20 minutes by car from Sliema, and the village square outside the palace has cafés for a coffee afterwards.
3. Christmas at the Fort, Delle Grazie Battery, Xgħajra
Also on Sunday 20 December 2026, Christmas at the Fort brings a festive market to the Delle Grazie Battery at Xgħajra, on the coast east of the Three Cities. The setting inside an old British-era fortification makes it one of the most unusual Christmas markets in Malta.
Pair it with a morning in Birgu and the Three Cities, which are especially lovely in December, and finish with sunset over the Grand Harbour. The fort is best reached by car or taxi from Sliema.
4. Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem on Gozo
Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem is a living nativity village near the Mġarr ferry harbour on Gozo, where hundreds of volunteers in costume recreate daily life in Bethlehem, with craftsmen, animals, bakers and the Holy Family. Last season it opened on selected dates from 14 December 2025 to 4 January 2026, with the Adoration of the Magi at Epiphany.
The ferry from Cirkewwa to Gozo takes around 25 minutes, and Għajnsielem is a short walk or drive from the Mġarr terminal, which makes it an easy day trip from Sliema. Check the opening dates before you go, because the village opens on selected afternoons rather than every day.
Village Christmas Markets in Malta 2026
- Woodland Christmas Market, Ta’ Qali: listed 4 to 13 December 2026
- Paola Christmas Village: listed 12 to 19 December 2026
- Malta Artisan Christmas Market, Naxxar: Sunday 20 December 2026, 11:00 to 18:00

Christmas in Malta 2026: Maltese Christmas Traditions, Cribs and Midnight Mass

Christmas in Malta is still deeply rooted in tradition. The most beloved is the presepju, the Christmas crib, which ranges from a small nativity on a family sideboard to vast, hand-built landscapes with working water mills, lights and hundreds of figures. Many parishes and societies open crib exhibitions through December, and walking from one to another is a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
In the weeks before Christmas, many Maltese families grow gulbiena, pale shoots of wheat or grain sprouted in the dark on cotton wool, to decorate the crib. On Christmas Eve, churches across the island hold Midnight Mass, where a young child traditionally gives the Christmas sermon, the Priedka tal-Milied. Even if you are not religious, the candlelit churches and the carols make it a memorable part of a Maltese Christmas.
Christmas Day itself is a family day in Malta, with long lunches at home and many restaurants closed. Boxing Day is another family day, and the celebrations continue to New Year’s Eve and Epiphany on 6 January, when the season draws to a close. A villa with a proper kitchen makes it easy to join in the Maltese way, with your own long Christmas lunch.
Maltese Christmas Traditions to Look Out For
- Presepju: the traditional Maltese Christmas crib, from small nativities to huge landscapes
- Gulbiena: sprouted wheat grown in the dark to decorate the crib
- Priedka tal-Milied: the Christmas sermon given by a child at Midnight Mass
- Crib exhibitions in parishes and village halls through December
- Epiphany on 6 January, which closes the Christmas season
Maltese Christmas Food and Drink to Try at the Malta Christmas Markets

Food is at the centre of every Maltese Christmas market. The classic treat is qagħaq tal-għasel, a ring of crisp pastry filled with a dark, spiced treacle mixture flavoured with citrus and cloves. Despite the name, which means honey rings, the filling is usually made with treacle, and they are sold everywhere in December, from market stalls to village bakeries.
After Midnight Mass, many families serve imbuljuta tal-qastan, a warm drink of chestnuts, cocoa and citrus peel, and you will find versions of it at some of the markets. Look out too for nougat, festive biscuits, chocolate Christmas logs and mulled wine, alongside the everyday Maltese dishes worth trying, such as pastizzi and ftira, which the market stalls sell to keep shoppers going.
Maltese Christmas Treats to Try
- Qagħaq tal-għasel: pastry rings with a spiced treacle filling
- Imbuljuta tal-qastan: a warm chestnut and cocoa drink after Midnight Mass
- Nougat, often sold by weight at market stalls
- Christmas logs and festive biscuits from local bakeries
- Mulled wine and hot chocolate at the evening markets
Malta at Christmas: December Weather, What Is Open and Getting Around the Christmas Markets
December in Malta averages highs of 17°C and lows of around 12°C, with the sea still at 18°C and around five hours of sunshine a day. Rain falls on about ten days in the month, usually in short showers, so an umbrella and a light jacket are all you need for most evenings at the markets. If you are still weighing December against other months, my month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Malta compares the whole year.
Most museums, restaurants and shops stay open through December, including St John’s Co-Cathedral and the Grandmaster’s Palace. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are the exceptions, with many restaurants closed and public transport on a reduced timetable, so book Christmas lunch early or plan to cook. New Year’s Eve is lively, with celebrations in Valletta and along the Sliema and St Julian’s seafront.
Getting around is simple from a Sliema base. The ferry runs to Valletta through the winter, buses reach Rabat, Ta’ Qali and Naxxar, and taxis and ride-share apps are the easiest way to reach the evening markets and get home afterwards. For Gozo, the ferry from Cirkewwa runs every day, with a crossing of around 25 minutes.
Malta in December at a Glance

- Museums and most restaurants open, except on 25 and 26 December

A Note From Susan
“My favourite Christmas evening in Malta starts with the ferry to Valletta at dusk, when the city lights come on across the harbour. We wander the Christmas lights on Republic Street, share a paper cone of roasted chestnuts, and come home to Aster House to warm up by the projector with a hot chocolate. It is Christmas without the cold, and I love it.”
