March is the month when Malta wakes up. The wildflowers begin in earnest mid-month, the days lengthen quickly, and the first warm afternoons start to feel like proper spring. The sea is still cold — 14-15°C and not yet swimmable for most — but the cliff walks above Dingli, the country lanes around Mgarr, and Buskett Gardens are at their best.
If you are coming for hiking, wildflowers, country drives, or a quiet cultural week before the Easter crowds, March is one of my favourite months at Aster House.

Mid-March brings the wildflower peak across Buskett Gardens, the Dingli Cliffs, and Ta’ Cenc on Gozo — crown daisies turn the cliff edges yellow, with wild orchids in the Mellieha valleys. Easter prep accelerates from mid-month, with processions rehearsing in Zebbug, Qormi, Mosta, and Vittoriosa. National Day falls on 31 March, marking the end of British rule.

What is open and what is closed
All museums and Valletta restaurants open. Comino ferries shifting back toward daily service from the second half of March, weather permitting. Public buses still on winter timetable. Beach lidos starting to reopen from the very end of March.
Why March works (and what to know)
March is when Maltese country produce starts to come back into restaurants — broad beans, artichokes, the first strawberries from Mgarr. Strawberries get their own festival in late April or early May.
