Malta Family Villa Holidays: Sliema Base for Families (2026)

Malta is one of the easiest places in Europe for a family holiday. It is small, so nothing is far. It is safe and sunny. English is spoken everywhere. And there is a genuine mix of things to do, from beaches and boat trips to gentle history the children will actually enjoy. The one decision that shapes the whole trip is where and how you stay.

For families, I always come back to the same answer: a villa base in Sliema. It gives you space, a kitchen and private outdoor space, in the most walkable, best-connected part of the island. Is Malta good for a family holiday?

Yes, genuinely. Malta suits families for practical reasons: it is compact, so you are never far from your base; it is safe, with quiet residential neighbourhoods; the weather is reliable from spring to autumn; and everyone speaks English, which makes the small things easy. Why a villa beats a hotel for families

• Separate bedrooms. Put the children to bed and still have your own space, rather than tiptoeing around one hotel room.
• A real kitchen. Breakfasts at your own pace, snacks for fussy eaters, and the odd dinner in, which also saves money.
• Space to spread out. A living room to gather in, room for a travel cot, and no negotiating over one small balcony.
• Private outdoor space. A rooftop or terrace of your own for lazy evenings once the children are asleep.
• Better value for a group. One villa is usually cheaper per person than three or four hotel rooms.
• A real host. Someone who can arrange a cot, recommend a family restaurant and answer questions quickly.

Why Sliema is the best family base

Sliema is the calmest of Malta’s central towns, and the most practical for families. The seafront promenade is flat, safe and made for a stroll with a pushchair or a scooter. The rocky lidos are good for a paddle and a swim. There are supermarkets, bakeries and family restaurants within a short walk, and the direct ferry to Valletta turns a sightseeing trip into a treat. Things to do in Malta with kids

• Swim and paddle at the Sliema lidos, or head north to the sandy beaches at Mellieha and Golden Bay.
• Ride the Valletta ferry and explore the capital’s forts and harbour views.
• Take a boat trip to the turquoise Blue Lagoon on Comino, a highlight for most children.
• Visit Popeye Village, the colourful film-set theme park in the north, a firm family favourite.
• Wander Mdina, the walled Silent City, which feels like a storybook for younger children.
• Hop on the open-top bus for an easy overview on a slower day.

What makes Aster House family-ready

Aster House was restored with families and friends in mind, not just decorated to look good in photos. It sleeps up to nine across three super king bedrooms, each with its own ensuite, plus flexible sofa beds, so a big family or two families together all fit comfortably.
